Online Data Backup: A Secure, Automated, & Offsite Backup Solution

Superior Data Protection & Speedy, Reliable Recovery

Whether human or system failure, virus or natural disaster, data is constantly at risk. Almost inevitable, data loss can range from simple annoyance to financial devastation. Today’s organizations need robust solutions that ensure backup discipline – and, more importantly, speedy, reliable recovery.

Online data backup delivers advanced data protection while combining data backup and offsite storage into one automated process. With online backup, data is instantly offsite with no courier costs, delivery hassles, or delay.

Better yet, the entire backup process is automated and hardware-free. Online backup is truly a “set it and forget it” solution.

Allowing you to focus on strategic initiatives, online backup dramatically improves the reliability of restores. Through a step-by-step wizard, files are recovered online through the central interface in a matter of seconds.

Unlike tape backup – which requires a substantial investment both in terms of hardware, labor, and maintenance – online backup simplifies the backup process while providing the ultimate in security. Managed online backup services eliminate the burden of tape and the failure rates associated with tape-based backup and recovery. For additional information regarding how online backup outperforms tape, check out the following article: Online Backup Vs. Tape.

The Online Data Backup Process

Since no hardware is required, implementing an online data backup solution is quick and easy. Service commences with a simple software install on selected servers, desktops, or laptops. The central interface is installed on a desktop and configured with data selection, retention schedules, and other settings.

Data will then automatically seed via the Internet or private line to a mass storage vault – or, for larger volumes, a Mobile Vault disk device may be used. A “seed” is the initial backup, which requires your full data set.

Subsequent to the first backup, changed data is detected and is the only data to be transferred, compressed, and stored as a new backup. Since changed data typically represents a few percent of native data, this process greatly reduces backup windows.

With AmeriVault’s online backup services, a digital “handshake” that confirms the integrity of the data sent versus the data received at the datacenter.

To complete the backup process, an email notification is sent following each backup to confirm success or inform of any problems.

Total Security and End-to-End Encryption

With AmeriVault’s online data backup services, backup data is stored in secure, monitored, world-class datacenters, equipped with redundant power and telecommunication supplies, climate controls, and fire suppression systems.

For additional disaster recovery purposes and heightened data protection, AmeriVault offers data to be replicated to another world-class datacenter located 1,000 miles away from the primary site.

SAS 70 (Type II) certification assures aggressive safeguards are in place to ensure the safety of your data with AmeriVault. During backup or restore transfers and while stored, data remains encrypted with industry-leading 256-bit AES encryption until deciphered on the client-side. AmeriVault has no means or back-door ability to decipher client data.

For further protection, data is transmitted in blocks – unintelligible, encrypted bits of data – rather than as whole files. Data block transmission offers much less risk compared to the full data sets found on tape backups.

Reducing Backup Windows with Online Data Backup

In addition to providing simplicity, automation, and security, online data backup offers advanced features that help reduce costs while improving service.

Once your data is seeded, AmeriVault’s online backup services detect the changes within files and databases and transmit only the block-level changes rather than the entire file. Common File Elimination (CFE) ensures that only one copy of duplicated files are backed up, reducing backup windows and costs. In addition, data is compressed prior to transmission to shorten backup windows even further. Data that would take hours to backup by tape can be backed up online – encrypted and stored offsite – in minutes.

Backup Lifecycle Manager (BLM) enables policies to automatically migrate older, less critical retentions to second-tier disk – helping drive-down monthly storage costs.

Regulatory Compliance & Online Data Backup

Sarbanes-Oxley, NASD, and HIPAA regulations are changing the way companies retain and manage their records. Many companies already have document retention policies, but new rules call for even more secure methods for data backup and recovery. Even small, private companies face data backup and recovery mandates from customers and insurance providers.

Satisfying many compliance concerns pertaining to data retention and contingency planning, AmeriVault’s online backup services feature built-in access controls, audit logs, and an infrastructure that is backed by a SAS 70 (Type II) certification. Disaster Recovery & Continuous Data Protection

Disasters and outages can have a profound effect on both revenue and reputation. A solid disaster recovery plan must go beyond simple in-house or tape-based backup – and include offsite protection, encryption, secure storage, and speedy data recovery. Aggressive disaster recovery plans may also incorporate additional data replication (to a second backup facility), hot or warm dedicated servers, and more.

Only online data backup allows the immediate transfer of data to a geographically distant location for disaster recovery purposes. More importantly, only online data backup allows immediate restores without involving couriers, unnecessary labor, or delivery time / costs.

For the most aggressive disaster recovery plans, continuous data protection (CDP) may be appropriate. Traditional backup technologies generally provide backup on a 24-hour batch rotation, leaving data created during the day vulnerable to loss until the backup would occur that evening. For critical file system and Exchange backup, online data backup delivers continuous data protection to prevent the loss of data generated throughout the day.

Continuous data protection allows online restores to be performed while the offsite transmission remains active. Should an application crash or some other failure occur, you are able to restore the most recent file version or email activity with a few mouse clicks.
